America has a 14% illiteracy rate. That's 46,012,633 people. The US is ranked #5 on the global literacy list. This needs to change.
Illiteracy limits ability to understand important information.
Illiteracy inhibits people from getting jobs (these jobs are often
lower-quality and lower-income).
Illiteracy translates to low self-esteem.
Illiteracy inhibits people from understanding their society and
participating in it.
As the percent of literacy falls in a society, so does the GDP.
Additionally, a lack of literacy results in a lower level of competition
in the global field. The country can not compete with other countries of
higher literacy rates.
The ability to read and write is a skill one utilizes every day; An
example would be looking for a specific aisle while shopping or when
using public transport. Being able to analyze and comprehend your world
is one of the biggest effects of being literate!
